5 YEARS AGO TODAY! December 3, 2004. It is a very special day. Momentous. Five years ago today and five years out of cancer treatment - my doctor says it’s the day a patient is considered cancer free. YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH TO ME!

December 3, 2004:
The Surgery

It was the morning of surgery. Lying in my surgical bed, the kind nurse inserted
a needle in my arm and secured it with tape. I was in a compartmentalized ward
sectioned off by baby blue curtains. There were about fifteen beds full of people waiting for their surgeries. I could hear the faint mumbled conversation of the woman next to me, her family surrounding her with somber affirmations. I could only imagine them nodding their heads like the faithful should. Soon the anesthesiologist came into my curtained room and asked me how I felt: Was I nervous? Would I prefer a calming drug? I felt none of it, that nervousness. I had no need to mumble affirmations into some accepting ear. I said no to their drugs but they gave it to me anyway. They stayed with me like precious statues and lifted the metal railings on the side of my bed to cart me away. And that is the last thing I remember. There was only the memory of nothingness while men in translucent gloves opened up my chest and took out the devil—the one-inch devil, screaming round in its determined fate kicking like some spoiled child who never wanted to leave home.

Hurtful confrontations often leave us feeling drained and confused. When someone attacks us emotionally, we may wonder what we did to rouse their anger, and we take their actions personally. We may ask ourselves what we could have done to compel them to behave or speak that way toward us. It‚s important to remember that there are no real targets in an emotional attack and that it is usually a way for the attacker to redirect their uncomfortable feelings away from themselves. When people are overcome by strong emotions, like hurt or anguish, they may see themselves as victims and lash out at others as a means of protection or to make themselves feel better. You may be able to shield yourself from an emotional attack by not taking the behavior personally. First, however, it is good to cultivate a state of detachment that can provide you with some protection from the person who is attacking you. This will allow you to feel compassion for this person and remember that their beha! vior isn‚t as much about you as it is about their need to vent their emotions.

If you have difficulty remaining unaffected by someone‚s behavior, take a moment to breathe deeply and remind yourself that you didn‚t do anything wrong, and you aren‚t responsible for people‚s feelings. If you can see that this person is indirectly expressing a need to you˜whether they are reaching out for help or wanting to be heard˜you may be able to diffuse the attack by getting them to talk about what is really bothering them.

You cannot control other people‚s emotions, but you can control your own. If you sense yourself responding to their negativity, try not to let yourself. Keep your heart open to them, and they may let go of their defensiveness and yield to your compassion and openness.

Heather and I made a quick stop to Ikea which turned into an hour “get lost in the store” venture. And near the registers @ Ikea were bins of kid’s stuff: hats, toys, etc., and we decided to try them on and pose for what obviously did not fit us. The black hat especially. My eyeballs are popping out!

bbc puts together time lapse footage of sea floor critters consuming a dead
seal. and like pretty much any other critter they go out to photograph, the
footage is fucking amazing. (time lapse + camera movements + under ice
capped water = awesome technically superior balls)

this documentary is the fucking awesome (and you are so gonna get it btw)
i would imagine it’d look so fucking incredible in glorious hd on your big

PALE GREY swoon. (via SOFTSERVEGIRL)

Last weekend Tricia helped me paint my guest bedroom. It was surprising how choosing a modern neutral like this pale grey made the room look Bigger! Needless to say I am thrilled with the results. Also My dad came over today and installed my IKEA RIBBA Picture Ledge. They are clean and modern with simple lines that do not intrude on content of the room. Also I really HATE nail holes in my walls and the thought of a picture ledge where I can trade out my photographs and rotate my art is really an attractive proposition.
